CSU-CHILL: 1999 Turbulence Project

This project involved aircraft from Allied Signal, Collins Radio, and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSMT). The Allied Signal and Collins aircraft flew radar systems with new turbulence detection features. The SDSMT armored T28 flew ahead of the other planes to assist in hail avoidance and penetrate more severe parts of the storms while making in-situ measurements. CSU-CHILL and the Pawnee radar did coordinated dual-doppler scans to provide an overview of the research area and guidance for the T28. The project was funded by Allied Signal, Collins Radio, and NASA and will also involve data analysis by NCAR researchers.  Operations trailer during Turbulence 99 project. The Universal Exchange Format (UF) radar tapes for the CHILL and Pawnee Radar data sets have been completed. UF tar tape summaries are available for the CHILL and PAWNEE radars. The CSU-CHILL Tar tape also includes virtually all of the files presented in the table below except as noted in the tape summaries.

Below is a table of operational days. For each day, the aircraft track files, UF-TAR tape summary entry and scan details for each volume scan collected are available. There is also a link to the pages with the images which were saved during the operation. These images have been configured with navigational links to other fields saved at the same time as well as links to previous and next images. The looping feature for dBZ fields should be also be available.  The format of the scan summaries for the two radars are different due to the data systems used, but in each case, you can determine the scan parameters in effect for each volume scan.
